Riding Western, the class performs as a group, demonstrating control at the walk and trot, stopping and backing up. Riders are judged on their equitation, and horses are judged on their manners and performance. The horse is to give the impression of being a pleasure to ride. Classes may be run in heats if there are multiple riders on the same horse.

POLE BENDING
A Western event where horse and rider weave through a course of six poles spaced 21 feet apart twice, circling the end poles before turning and racing to the finish line. The pattern must be followed exactly. Riders are timed and a five-second penalty is added for each pole knocked down.

BARREL RACING
A Western event where three barrels are placed in a triangular pattern, and the rider must ride around each one in a clover leaf pattern. Riders are timed and a five-second penalty is added for each barrel knocked down. If the rider touches a barrel or if the barrel just tips, but does not fall to the ground, then there is no penalty.
